Five Minute Friday Learn

Image
The school year is back In full swing in my little corner of Florida. I love hearing from my enthusiastic son about what he learned each day. He even tells me facts that I never heard before. My daughters are a little bit more reluctant to share what they learned in school. As a parent, it is one of my jobs to teach them and prepare for the world around them. Before I had children I never realized how much they would teach me. God uses my kids to teach me about love, kindness, joy and grace. I am so thankful for my not so little teachers, and I hope that we have a wonderful year of learning and growing together.

Five Minute Friday Accountability

Image
Accountability saved my life. In the darkest season of my life, I was isolated from everyone that I loved except those who were living with me. If my friends and family did not realize that something was horribly wrong, I don’t know if I would be here today. They reached out to me over and over again. Even when I rejected their attempts out of fear. They never gave up on me even when I gave up myself. I want to be the kind of friend that my friends were to me. I’m so thankful that God knew it was not good for each of us individuals to be alone. He gave us the gift a community and accountability.

Five Minute Friday From

Image
From pretending everything was okay, to making the changes needed.. From being afraid to share what was going on, to wanting to share my story in hopes of helping others. From people pleasing to trying live my life for an audience of One From twisting myself into a pretzel to accommodate others to realizing that it is healthy to express my needs sometimes too. From feeling trapped and isolated to using my freedom to love others. From being overwhelmed by decisions to learning to take the next right step in love. From over-apologizing to owning the things that I am responsible for and not taking responsibilities for the opinions, attitudes and actions of others. From living distractedly to being a more present mom. From reacting from fear to leading with love. From enumerating worries to counting every blessing.   From being paralyzed by fear to stepping out in faith

I want to be a praying Mom (book review)

Image
“A praying mom parents with prayer.” This idea from Brooke McGothlin’s latest book really appeals to me. I have found it difficult to live this out. This is the reason I was so excited to be a part of the prayer team for the book Praying Mom.  Brooke describes seven challenges to being a praying parent, Brooke points out that the Bible doesn’t just direct us to pray, but several verses describe that the attitude of a thankful heart is to pray thanking God for all the many blessings in our lives. Brooke tackles the elephant in the room, discussing disappointment that we feel when our prayers are not answered the way we hope. Jesus called the blind man Bartimaeus closer, and He calls us closer as well. Especially when we feel disappointed by circumstances in our lives. Brooke shares, “His promise to do what is best for us is tied inextricably to what is best for ushering in Hs kingdom.” I love one of the scriptural prayers Brooke described fr...

Five Minute Friday Drive

Image
I almost skipped this weeks five minute Friday. I have health issues prevent me from driving. I didn’t know at first what I could write about. My mom says, that you can’t miss something you never did. I don’t necessarily agree. I may not know the feeling of my hands on the wheel and my foot on the gas pedal, But I do miss the freedom, independence and spontaneity that being able to drive would be able to give me and my children. When I or my kids need to go somewhere we ask another member of our household (usually my Mom) to take us. I appreciate that my mom is willing to take us wherever we need to go, but I would love to be able to jump in the car and take my kids for ice cream on the spur of the moment, without having to make a plan. I realize that I need to guard my heart. I don’t want to have a bad attitude like is described Romans 9:20. “  On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers [arrogantly] back to God  and  dares to defy ...

Five Minute Friday Strong

Image
In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [draw your strength from Him and  be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power of His [boundless] might.” Ephesians 6:10                                                                         If you asked me to think of words to describe myself strong would not be one of the words I would chose. I am thankful for the truth in the above verse. I do not need to conjure up strength on my own. My strength comes from God. As the hymn says, “I am weak, but Thou art strong” Our Heavenly Father’s might is boundless. He never grows tired or weary. This truth is so encouraging to me as a single Mom. I can rest soundly each evening. My loving Heavenly Father never slumbers. May I remember to run to my Strong Tower and find rest and strength in Him.  The J...

Five Minute Friday Summer

Image
When I read that the Five Minute Friday prompt this week was the word “Summer”, my first thought was the sound of Josh Gad in his role as the character Olaf in the movie Frozen singing the words “In Summer!” When I think of Summer, I think of watching my children ride scooters down the hills in our neighborhood. I think of the days being longer and that my children enjoy being outside in the early evenings because the middle of the day in Florida is so hot. I think of cool refreshing snacks such as watermelon, popsicles and ice cream. I was talking to my daughter on the phone the other day, and she chided me for bringing up the subject of school supplies because it was interfering with her Summer vibes. There will be plenty of time to talk about school shopping in August.  My children are spending some quality time with their Dad right now, but I look forward to making fun Summer memories when they come home in a couple of weeks. What are yo...
